NCST Commemoration of the Genocide: Dr. Bugingo Represents INES-Ruhengeri Management

20 May 2024

On May 17th, 2024, the National Council for Science and Technology (NCST) organized a commemoration event at the Nyamata Genocide Memorial in Bugesera District to honor the memory of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. This solemn occasion aimed to reaffirm our commitment to unity, reconciliation, and peace.

Dr. Bugingo Jean Bosco, the Director of Laboratories, represented the management of the Institut d'Enseignement Supérieur de Ruhengeri (INES-Ruhengeri) at this event. The event saw the participation of various partner institutions, including the East African Science and Technology Commission (EASTECO), University of Rwanda (UR), National Industrial Research and Development Agency (NIRDA), Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC), Carnegie Mellon University (CMU)-Africa, and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS), among others.

Upon arrival at the Nyamata Genocide Memorial, attendees were received by Eric Muhayurkundo, who oversees the memorial. He provided an explanation of the history of the genocide and the tragic events that led to the deaths of over 45,000 victims interred at this site.

The NCST commemoration is part of a series of events marking the 30th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, which began on April 7th and spans 100 days of remembrance. This period is a time for Rwanda, the African region, and the world to collectively remember and honor the lives lost during this tragic chapter in history.

The NCST invited partner institutions to nominate staff members to participate in the commemoration, emphasizing the importance of solidarity and unity in preventing such atrocities in the future. The presence of Dr. Bugingo and other representatives served as a powerful symbol of this collective commitment.

This event underscores the ongoing dedication to remembering the past, fostering reconciliation, and promoting peace to ensure that such a tragedy never occurs again.
