INES-Ruhengeri Students Participate in National Reading and Writing Competition with Two Powerful Books

10 June 2025

On April 4, 2025, two powerful books written by 39 students from INES-Ruhengeri earned the university Second Place at the National Reading and Writing Competition for Higher Learning Institutions. The event was held at Intare Arena and organized by the Rwanda Writers Federation in partnership with the Pan-African Movement. It brought together universities from across the country to celebrate literature and critical thinking. The two books, RPF mu Iterambere ry’Uburezi mu Rwanda and Genocide Never Again: A Letter to the Youth, were authored by members of INES-Ruhengeri’s Reading and Writing Club. Their work showcased not only strong research and writing skills but also a deep commitment to Rwanda’s development and the power of youth-driven storytelling.

RPF mu Iterambere ry’Uburezi mu Rwanda: Highlighting Education Reforms After the Genocide

Written in Kinyarwanda by 27 students, this book explores the transformative role of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF-Inkotanyi) in rebuilding the education system after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The authors examine the discriminatory practices that defined the education landscape during the First and Second Republics marked by ethnic and regional exclusion and explain how post-genocide reforms introduced by the RPF laid the foundation for inclusive and equitable education.

The book details the expansion of school infrastructure, teacher recruitment, and policy shifts that prioritized access to quality education for all Rwandans. It offers a well-researched and patriotic reflection on education as a pillar of national recovery and sustainable development.

Genocide Never Again: A Letter to the Youth: A Global Appeal for Peace and Responsibility

In their second submission, 12 students wrote a compelling English-language book that analyzes the concept of genocide through a comparative lens. Using historical examples such as the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, and the Genocide against the Tutsi, the authors draw attention to the root causes, warning signs, and far-reaching consequences of mass atrocities.

The book culminates in a heartfelt message addressed to the youth, urging them to embrace peace, unity, and moral responsibility. With calls for justice, education, and remembrance, the students reaffirm the importance of saying “Never Again” not just in words, but through conscious action.

The participation of INES-Ruhengeri in the competition through these two collaborative books reflects the university’s growing reputation for academic excellence and civic-minded education. This national recognition highlights not only literary talent but also INES-Ruhengeri’s role in shaping thoughtful, informed, and responsible future leaders.
