On 04th August 2025, INES-Ruhengeri is deeply honoured to welcome Bishop Charles Kasonde, Bishop of Solwezi Diocese (Zambia), President of the AMECEA Conference of Bishops, and Chancellor of the Catholic University of Eastern Africa (Kenya), for an official visit to the University of Applied Sciences. Accompanied by members of the General Assembly Members delegation, the Bishop’s visit marked a moment of reflection, learning, and potential partnership across institutions rooted in shared values.
The visit began with a warm
reception followed by a comprehensive presentation by the Vice Chancellor of
INES-Ruhengeri Fr. Dr. BARIBESHYA Jean
Bosco, showcasing the institution’s transformation since its orientation
towards applied sciences in 2010. This strategic shift responded to a critical
need in the region: bridging the gap between theoretical education and the
practical demands of the labour market.

The university currently
offers 28+ undergraduate and 12+ postgraduate
programs across applied science, technology, health, engineering, business,
agriculture, law, and education. Flagship programs include Software
Engineering, Civil Engineering, Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Plant
Biotechnology, and Taxation all supported by state-of-the-art laboratories and
learning facilities.
After the presentation,
Bishop Kasonde and the delegation toured various academic laboratories and
innovation centers, witnessing firsthand the practical and applied approach to
education at INES-Ruhengeri. From the Nursing,
Anaestesia Skills Labs to the Archtecture
Studio, the visit illuminated the university’s hands-on pedagogy and its
commitment to scientific excellence.
Bishop Kasonde expressed
his deep appreciation for how far the university has come in a relatively short
time. He praised the leadership and vision of INES-Ruhengeri and noted that “there
is much that can be done together in terms of partnerships.” His message
encouraged stronger collaboration between Catholic institutions in Africa,
especially in areas of research, faculty exchange, and student mobility.
